There are currently too many types of plastic used in our packaging, some can be recycled and other can't. If we have to have plastic bottles or boxes they should all be made from the same type of plastic to make recycling easier.
It's a matter of driving down the cost of a product to increase profit and pass savings to the consumer. There are too many suppliers of plastics and (i'm guessing) the plastics that can't be recycled are cheaper to make and therefore more desirable for producers.
Plastics for packaging are mass produced which means they are cheaper to buy for producers which means cheaper products for consumers. The new technologies being explored and produced such as plant based materials used for packaging are new and expensive because they produced on a small scale. If producers started to create a demand for these new materials the supply would increase and therefore drive the cost down.
