Eastbourne needs an organised network to allow safe cycling in all parts of the town. The most important priority is the seafront. Where the pavement is shared with pedestrians, it is inadequate. It is not a system that is well understood and accepted by pedestrians. This facility stops in the middle of the seafront and cyclists then need to use the main road when it is at its narrowest. Cycling must be allowed on the promenade, which could be shared especially where there are 2 levels.
Trying to reduce traffic emissions by encouraging people to cycle, to improve fitness and tackle obesity must a priority. The government is currently encouraging such initiatives and Eastbourne must not be left behind.
