Protect and enhance the moor, woodlands and river habitats to restore biodiversity through appropriate management plans.
We need to protect and improve what we have
The health, and the extent of the blanket bog on Ilkley Moor should be a top priority. Nothing is more effective for long term carbon capture and storage than blanket bog. A 30cm depth of blanket bog over a given area, stores as much carbon as the same area of tropical rain forest. Approx 30% of all terrestrial stored carbon is stored in blanket bogs. Ilkley Moor was formerly covered in blanket bog. Now only a small area is thriving. We must protect and expand this bog.
Ilkley moor is suffering a serious erosion problem caused by mountain biking. the moor seems to have become a honeypot for such activity. every footpath on the moor has serious erosion and many attractive footpaths have been totally destroyed by mountain bikers. They have also forged new tracks across the upland peat blanket bog .
