The Mayor should take the lead in West Yorkshire becoming the first ‘Region of Sanctuary’: This is not a stated responsibility of the West Yorkshire mayor but could be an initiative that the mayor takes after election by using their functional power of competence. This would build on existing cities/towns of sanctuary in the region & would involve developing an action plan with specific targets for implementation and associated resources.
This may mean working with other mayors at the Yorkshire level and at the Northern level in order to build a Yorkshire and a Northern region of Sanctuary from the bottom up.
I agree. We could offer via AMP a succinct City of Sanctuary briefing to the Mayor - covering its Theory of Change. Even better, ask the Mayoral candidates to sign-up to the Network Principles. Without that sort of engagement, there is a greater risk of notional support i.e. paying lip service to the concept of City of Sanctuary
