Traffic Free High Street

Traffic Free High Street

The High Street currently is lawless...cars/vans/trucks, theyre all there , driving at speed up the street and parking on the side of the roads that are clearly not for this use! It is a social , or rather an anti-social issue that should be dealt with by the local town council but remains unresolved and confrontational at times. We need a clear, spelt-out in great detail and on VERY BIG LETTERS on road signs to stop this . Currently no consequences for breaking the law so drivers continue!!

Points

The high street needs re-generating with new shops/market areas and people to come into the town to support this. The lack of clarity around the traffic is causing one of the biggest obstacles to this.We need free parking in the car park areas on Thursday and Saturdays and traffic free areas to encourage familys, visitors and residents to use their town centre. This is vital for the survival of the centre of the town as it in danger of becoming a ghost town, made up of low -cost housing and mess

We need free parking every day, not just market days - it's ridiculous having to pay to park when you just want one shop, the Post Office or the one remaining ATM. The new market isn't exactly thriving - people from outside Newhaven need to be encouraged to come here, but they won't if they have to pay to park. Seaford has on-street parking and the town centre is always busy, but Newhaven hasn't. Carving up the High Street to provide this is one option but not very practical.

Too many Taxis now in the town. They park on the pavement causing problems for the blind. The high street used to be thriving before the ring road. Don't close it more.

There is confusion about what is and is not pedestrianised, so many people walk in areas that they believe to be safe but aren't. Money could be used to provide signage and some free parking in both town centre car parks. This would reduce the number of vehicles parked illegally on the high street and make the town more accessible to visitors. Perhaps the town, district and county councils could match fund to gentrify the centre and perhaps by subsidising business rates get investment rolling

Good idea, however, we need footfall through the high street. We are losing shops. Traffic brings people and than brings customers.
