Cap on Gender reassignment surgery

Cap on Gender reassignment surgery

My surgeon was advised that My surgery was funded on 25th April 2014 When I met with my surgeon for the Pre Op consultation (590 mile round trip at MY Expense) I was advised that NHS England had put a cap on Gender Reassignment surgery and I could not be given a date for surgery! This is MOST Upsetting. I am now faced with total uncertainty as to whether I will ever get surgery. I am one voice for many who are in a similar position!

Points

Comment opposite informs of 41% attemped suicide rate, but in fact this rate relates to USA. The Lesbian and Gay Foundation puts forward 3 points( increase evidence base, knowledge and engagement with policy makers and increase capacity with VCS) engagement refers to Intervention to break the cycle of LGB&T margnalisation. Are the needs of the LGB&T community reflected in the JSNA & Joint Health & Wellbeing Strategy in your CCG/LA area? Getting the right services will reduce suicide attempts.

With 41% attempted suicide rate, cheaper to enable adequate care

The costs are relatively small compared to other life changing treatments and the gains in life quality and overall health and wellbeing far outweigh the cost. While some may argue for capping other comparable services such as obesity treatment, liver transplants due to alcohol damage, smoking related illness etc etc it is all based on the misconception that the patient is somehow at fault so it is OK to cap their treatment. This punitive approach costs our society more in the long run

Funding cap despite waiting list over a year!

Hard one to call as there are many factors to consider, Certain cancer drugs not approved by NICE maybe funded in part where the patient cofunds the drug, CCG's may only fund a couple rounds of Infertility IVF Treatment. The bottom line is that treatment so not be refused just because NICE has not produced Clinical Guidelines to that treatment and of course in some/most CCG areas GID Treatment maybe listed as ' low priority', if that is the case then campaign the Specilized commissioniers/GID Clincial Reference Group ( NHS England) and `local commissioners.

Hi I would request a statement of reasons and appeal if necessary. Below are 3 links: the 2nd is a independent source of funding although 2014 applications are now closed but can apply for 2015. The 3rd link is produced by NHS Engand and you may find it useful about how GID services are commissioned. Best of luck, better still 'being informed is about being well informed'. http://transthoughts.wordpress.com/ http://jimcollinsfoundation.org/apply/ http://www.england.nhs.uk/wp-conten

My understanding is that this has now been resolved and that surgery will continue until the end of the year as normal. Even so, it's important for us to know how this was ever allowed to happen, why they thought it was acceptable to halt surgery when waiting lists are well over a year, and what is being done to ensure this doesn't happen again next year.
